Is polished concrete environmentally friendly?

Without a doubt, polished concrete is definitely environmentally friendly! There are several reasons for this. Firstly, it takes very minimal cleaning products to keep polished concrete spotless and hygienic. Polished concrete is also not susceptible to mould or allergens. Furthermore, it’s extremely low maintenance, and quite often, polishing is carried out on existing concrete once floor coverings like carpet or tiles have been removed.

Secondly, believe it or not, polished concrete flooring also saves on energy usage, which is clearly a huge issue worldwide. Cement is generally made from some of the most common substances on earth, such as limestone, shells, shale, clay, slate, blast furnace slag, silica sand and iron ore. You may be surprised to learn that concrete can also be made from waste by-products, meaning that these days, newer concrete can contain recycled glass, metal and marble chips, helping to reduce the amount of waste in our environment.

Thirdly, concrete is an extremely small contributor to greenhouse gases. In fact, concrete will outperform timber, steel, carpet and tiles – which all need more regular maintenance and can require much harsher (and less environmentallyriendly) cleaning products than polished concrete. Hanson Concrete offers a range of specially formulated concrete mixes that contain a reduced specified percentage of cement. Instead, Hanson Concrete has substituted some of their cement with waste materials, including slag (a steel manufacturing by-product) and fly ash (a coal combustion by-product). These products meet the Green Building Council of Australia Green Star rating system requirements (GBCA), and this adds between one to three green points.

Additionally, at Grind and Seal Melbourne, we use a dry grinding system, which eliminates the need to use large amounts of water. Our concrete grinding process also offers CO2 emission savings by not having to contract waste removal companies to remove and process the liquid waste. As a result, along with the energy savings, polished concrete is one of the most environmentally-friendly flooring choices you can find anywhere.
