Mechanically Polished Concrete (MPC)
Mechanically polished concrete floors not only look the best but are the most durable and long lasting. We would normally recommend an MPC over other types of polished concrete flooring, however there are some exceptions. When we say that a floor is mechanically polished we are talking about the process itself where by in basic terms we buff the concrete until it shines. That is not to say that all mechanically polished floors have to be shiny, in fact you can finish an MPC floor in a matte, semi or high gloss.
There are a few well-known brands when it comes to MPC that some clients will be familiar with and or specify. These include a Hiperfloor by Husqvarna or Superfloor by HTC. Grind and Seal are one of the few companies in Melbourne that can offer both of these brands along with our own signature MPC.
The above mentioned systems/processes are particularly involved and are highly desired by many architects, interior designers and builders as they really do demonstrate polished concrete at its absolute best! The upfront cost of true polished concrete is well worth the price tag as there is very little ongoing maintenance required for the life of the floor – in fact it ends up being the most cost effective flooring solution available on the market when you look at it over a 20 year cycle which is why many builders are choosing it. Because and MPC floor has no topical coating (unlike an epoxy or grind and seal) there is nothing that can get scratched by furniture or pets and wear away over time. This means that it will stay looking like new for many years longer.
Not only is the MPC option the best value for money, it is also environmentally sensible as the existing slab is used, minimizing waste, and due to the reflective properties of the floor it can reduce your lighting requirements. Also the thermal mass of the slab helps to keep your floor warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
On a health note – other forms of flooring can play havoc with asthmatics or other allergic conditions, but because the MPC method refines the concrete and fills in all the tiny pin holes and cracks – there is nowhere for the dirt, toxic mould and dust mutes to accumulate. Mechanically polished concrete brings together beauty, functionality, strength and is easy to clean and maintain!
