Can your 3mm micro-topping overlay be put over tiles?
Our micro-topping can be placed over tiles as long as the tiles aren’t ‘drummy.’ Drummy tiles are tiles that create a hollow sound if struck and these tiles may come loose and ruin your overlay. It’s difficult to quantify this precisely, so we do always advise to have the tiles removed to be safe. By removing your existing tiles, it allows us to polish the existing concrete beneath and it also avoids the risk of encountering drummy tiles that could loosen and interfere with the overlay.
The same idea also applies to timber and other coverings like vinyl. Basically, it can be done, and we are aware that some other Melbourne contractors are willing to do so, but there’s no guarantee it will last, so we don’t recommend it. We always recommend removing your existing flooring so that we can polish the concrete underneath.
